Nonprofit Kit for Dummies

By Janet Camarena

The nonprofit field can be somewhat mysterious for those just entering the sector or for those interested in establishing their own nonprofits. It is with this audience in mind that Stan Hutton and Frances Phillips recently co-authored the very accessible desk reference, the Nonprofit Kit for Dummies. Both Hutton and Phillips have years of experience working on both sides of the grantmaking and grantseeking tables, and this comes across in the scope and presentation of the valuable information this resource compiles.

In keeping with the Dummies tradition, this book is fashioned with the true novice in mind. It is easy on the eyes with many checklists, icons, and summary charts. And the authors do not necessarily intend that one read the book from cover to cover. Each chapter can provide an excellent stand-alone overview on its own. Whether you are struggling with writing your mission statement or creating your first fundraising plan, there is likely to be a chapter for you.

Nonprofit Kit for Dummies is arranged in five parts, which cover getting started with nonprofits, managing a nonprofit organization, raising money and visibility, the "part of tens" (in which myths are dispelled and top tips shared), and some appendices, including a glossary of terms. The book also includes a CD-ROM with some useful tools to complement the content in each chapter, such as a sample fiscal sponsorship agreement, IRS forms for establishing a nonprofit organization, model board agendas, mission statements, job descriptions, and organizational budgets.

This book fills a much-needed niche in the sector, since it demonstrates sensitivity and pays attention to the unique needs of the new nonprofit. Nonprofit Kit for Dummies, with its accessible checklist style and sector insight is sure to be a favorite reference for the nonprofit novice. Although it is most likely not for the seasoned veteran, this audience may also find it a useful tool in orienting new board members or volunteers. This will be a valuable addition to any resource collection that serves those new to the sector.
