African American Experience Fund of the National Park Foundation
Mission:
To support and preserve African American history by sponsoring educational, volunteer, and community-engagement programs in national parks and at historic sites.
About the Organization:
A national fundraising organization of the congressionally chartered National Park Foundation, AAEF supports programs at nineteen historic sites across the country, sharing little known facts and stories about African Americans and providing visitors with hands-on educational experiences.
Current Programs:
AAEF park sites include the African Burial Ground National Monument, the Brown vs. Board of Education historic site, the Cane River Creole National Historic Park, the Frederick Douglass Historic Site, the George Washington Carver National Monument, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, and the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail. In addition, the organization supports the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, a program designed to coordinate the preservation and education efforts of historical places, museums, and interpretive programs associated with the Underground Railroad.
Web Site:
The AAEF Web site features an interactive map of national park sites, a video about the organization, profiles of each AAEF park site, and news and event updates. Visitors to the site are encouraged to submit a photo and description of their experience at a park site, volunteer, subscribe to the AAEF e-newsletter, and/or make a donation.
Funding:
AAEF receives support from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
