Code for America

Code for America
Founded: 2009

Mission: Government can work for the people, by the people, in the digital age. Let’s make it work for everyone.

About the organization: Code for America is a technology nonprofit that uses insights and ideas from real people to guide us to real solutions that break down barriers to meet community needs and improve government in meaningful ways.

Current programs: Code for America uses the principles and practices of the digital age to improve how government serves the public. The organization works shoulder-to-shoulder with community organizations and government to build digital tools and services, change policies, and improve programs. Program areas include:

  • Shrinking the criminal legal system: Code for America works with people in communities and in government to break down barriers in America’s systems, including the criminal legal system.
  • Strengthening the social safety net: The people who need access to government benefits the most currently are not included in the design of government programs and services. And this exclusion results in barriers to America’s social safety net.
  • Promoting economic justice through tax benefits: Code for America believes that financial stability should be equitable, inclusive, and guaranteed to everyone.
  • Mobilizing a national network: Code for America’s vision extends beyond one organization. Their mission to inspire change is part of a network of thousands of people who are dedicated to putting technology to work for the benefit of our local communities.

Website: Visitors to the Code for America website can explore the organization’s program areas, learn about their ideas on government transformation, find out how to get involved, and/or make a donation. The site also features a news and stories section, upcoming events, and further information about the organization. In addition, site users can connect to the organization on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube.

Funding: Code for America is supported by foundations, corporations, and individuals.
