Jimmy Fund

Jimmy Fund
Founded: 1948

Mission:
To support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's efforts to fight adult and pediatric cancers.

About the Organization:
The Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948 when the Variety Children's Charity of New England and the Boston Braves baseball team joined forces to help a twelve-year-old cancer patient dubbed "Jimmy." In the months that followed, the fund received donations from thousands of people in support of Dr. Sidney Farber's efforts to find for a cure for childhood leukemia. In the decades since, funding from the Jimmy Fund has helped turn what was a small basement laboratory into a world-renowned cancer center with four thousand faculty and staff.

Current Programs:
Now an official charity of the Boston Red Sox, the MassachusettsChiefs of Police Association, and the Pan-Mass Challenge, as well as the Variety Children's Charity of New England, the Jimmy Fund raises funds through a variety of events, including the B.A.A. Half Marathon, the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge, Jimmy Fund Golf tournaments, and Rally Against Cancer. Donations to the fund help finance groundbreaking clinical trials, the development of new cancer-fighting drugs, state-of-the-art equipment, critical basic research, and Dana-Farber's efforts to provide patients with care that addresses the full spectrum of their physical, emotional, and psychological needs.

Web Site:
Visitors to the Jimmy Fund site can read about advances in cancer research at Dana-Farber or stories from patients; watch videos of supporters discussing why they volunteer or participate in fundraising events; or keep up with developments in cancer research via the organization's blog. They also can learn about ways to give, upcoming fundraising events, and/or volunteer opportunities or how to organize an event with support from the fund via the Event Manager Center and create an event fundraising page.
