Walk Free Foundation
Mission:
To end modern-day slavery by mobilizing a global activist movement, generating high-quality research, and enlisting business and governments to bring about change.
About the Organization:
Launched by Australian mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest as an initiative of his Minderoo holding group, the Walk Free Foundation works to identify countries and industries most responsible for modern-day slavery; develop and implement, in collaboration with a range of partners, interventions likely to have the greatest impact on ending slavery; and assess the impact of those efforts.
Current Programs:
The organization's initiatives to end slavery include a number of strategic grassroots advocacy campaigns designed to build broad public support for legislative, corporate, and social policy change and enforcement; the Global Slavery Index, an annual report that quantifies the prevalence of slavery in every country and places those figures in the context of what governments are doing to address the issue; and the Global Freedom Network, an interfaith initiative that brings together the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the world's foremost seat of Sunni learning, to condemn and end modern slavery. The organization also works to engage business leaders in making sure their supply chains are slave-free. In 2015, the foundation will launch the Global Fund to End Slavery, which aims to engage governments, the private sector, civil society, and survivors of modern slavery in a collective effort to raise funds for and scale proven anti-slavery interventions.
