10Questions
Mission:
To increase civic engagement around elections and the voting process.
Background:
Launched in September 2007 by the Personal Democracy Forum, 10Questions is a platform that connects voters directly to candidates during an election year. Prior to the 2008 election, presidential nominees John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Mike Huckabee, Dennis Kucinich, and Barack Obama each answered at least one of the questions submitted to the site (more than three hundred were submitted), which covered a broad range of topics, from government spending to net neutrality. The site was re-launched in time for the 2010 midterm elections with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Outstanding Web Features:
The site features a Web page for political contests in eleven states where site visitors can post a text or video question and vote up or down on previously submitted questions. (You must have a Google account to post or vote on questions.) After candidates post a video response to a specific question, site visitors can rate the answers for completeness, directness, depth, and substance. In addition, visitors to the site can embed questions on their own Web site or blog.
