Association of Cancer Online Resources

Association of Cancer Online Resources

Mission:
To improve the quality of care provided to cancer patients and the quality of life of patients, survivors, and their caregivers.

Background:
Founded in 1996, the Association of Cancer Online Resources (ACOR) is a volunteer-driven umbrella organization that links cancer patients, their families, and caregivers with information, support, and community via e-mail lists of online peer-support groups. The 135 specialized lists deliver at least 1.5 million messages each week to more than fifty thousand subscribers worldwide, breaking down the physical barriers that cancer patients with mobility impairments often face and supplying access to information and support on even the most sensitive topics. They are especially useful to subscribers with rare forms of cancer and those living in communities with few resources. Besides creating and managing the lists, ACOR hosts some patient-directed Web sites and conducts research.

Web Site:
The ACOR Web site includes all the "mailing lists" it manages and information on how to use them; other online resources; types of cancer; clinical trials; recommended publications; a dictionary with almost seven thousand terms; site-navigation assistance; and frequently asked questions about the Health eCommunities Project to assess the impact of participation in ACOR's cancer-related mailing lists.
