BigLeap
Mission:
To enable a broad segment of society to help address significant social issues through crowdfunded challenges and rewards.
Background:
Launched in 2013 by a team of Internet and software veterans who believe that "everyone in the world can be a catalyst for positive change" and that "small teams can best solve the world's toughest problems," BigLeap provides a platform that enables anyone to solve a pressing social problem by creating a challenge competition. Challenges are created through a simple three-step process: setting a tangible goal realted to a greater good (e.g., improving the efficiency of solar panels by 75 percent); crowdfunding a reward or prize to power the challenge; and mobilizing a team, from around the corner or around the world, to compete for the prize. BigLeap helps the "champion" of the challenge set the parameters for the challenge, specify a prize or reward amount, and define the winning criteria. A prize is awarded only when a challenge is met, while donations to challenges that aren't met within a designated timeframe are refunded or transferred to another challenge. As of August, BigLeap is in the process of applying for Benefit Corporation status in Delaware.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can start a challenge; browse challenges in process or preview challenges under development; and/or apply to compete in a challenge. Each challenge description page includes funding details, profiles of that particular challenge's "champions," links to relevant media reports and research, and details for "challengers" competing to solve the challenge such as submission requirements and selection criteria. Visitors to the site also can sign up for e-mail updates.
