Background:
Since 1983, the Buckminster Fuller Institute has served as a clearinghouse for information about architect/inventor/author/visionary R. Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller, who saw himself as an "anticipatory design scientist" working to advance socially responsible solutions to a variety of global issues, including affordable housing, education, energy shortages, ecological destruction, and poverty. BFI maintains a detailed inventory of the practices and principles informing Fuller's approach to design innovation — including, until 1999, the Fuller Archive, which has since moved to the Stanford University Libraries. The Fuller Challenge, an annual competition launched in 2007, offers a $100,000 prize for a socially responsible design solution.

Visitors also can learn how to get support the institute through volunteer opportunities or by making a donation.
