Civil Rights Digital Library

Civil Rights Digital Library

Mission:
To promote a better understanding of the civil rights movement by providing access to primary sources and educational materials from libraries, archives, museums, and public broadcasters.

Background:
Launched in 2008 as part of the University System of Georgia's GALILEO initiative, the Civil Rights Digital Library has three main components — a digital video archive of unedited historical news footage from the WSB (Atlanta) and WALB (Albany, Georgia) archives at the University of Georgia Libraries; a virtual library that draws on holdings from more than ninety libraries and other partner organizations, as well as a variety of instructional materials, including contextual stories, encyclopedia articles, lesson plans, and activities designed to facilitate the use of video content in teaching and learning about the movement.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can browse the collections by event, people, and topic; explore an interactive map to find items relevant to a specific location; and/or search by keyword, contributing institution, media type (e.g., audio recordings, photographs, transcripts, letters, reports, and government records), and genre, including biographies, interviews, and oral histories. CRDL's resources for educators include worksheets, timelines, study guides, and Freedom on Film, which provides lesson plans and and discussion questions related to the civil rights movement in Georgia, as well as the multimedia New Georgia Encyclopedia.
