CK-12 Foundation
Mission:
To reduce the cost of K-12 textbook materials in the United States and abroad.
Background:
Funded in part by the San Jose-based Amar Foundation, the CK-12 Foundation is working to build a collaborative online environment that facilitates the production of free educational content aligned with standards-based curriculum guidelines. The site can be customized for students' different needs and learning styles.
Outstanding Web Features:
Recognizing the need for a more flexible, less expensive system for delivering educational materials, CK-12 developed the FlexBook model — an online, open-content alternative to traditional textbooks. Registered visitors can watch a how-to demo video and slideshows before creating their own FlexBooks. The FlexBooks can then be shared with students and teachers as PDFs or in print and can be modified or updated at any time. The CK-12 site also offers an archive of textbook-related news, a blog, and an example of a FlexBook chapter on twenty-first century physics.
