Climate Reality Project
Mission:
To highlight the reality of anthropogenic climate change in a way that catalyzes bold actions designed to help move the global economy from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energies.
Background:
Founded in 2006 by Nobel Laureate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, the Climate Reality Project aims to raise awareness of how climate change is affecting our daily lives, realistic solutions for addressing the crisis, and the actions individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint and help "power the revolution for climate action." The project's initiatives include an annual 24 Hours of Reality, a multimedia event designed to highlight the climate crisis in every region of the world; the Climate Reality Leadership Corps, a global network of activists who receive training in climate science, communications, and organizing skills so they can inspire communities around the globe to take action; and campaigns such as The People vs. Carbon, What I Love, and I AM PRO SNOW.
Outstanding Web Features:
Designed to serve as a hub that catalyzes climate change action, the website calls on visitors to "get smart, get loud, and get active" by sharing slide shows and videos about the basic science of climate change — including the role carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels plays in the rise of both atmospheric carbon levels and global temperatures, the link between global warming and extreme weather events and rising sea levels, and the economic, environmental, and human costs of these and other climate change effects. Visitors to the site also can sign a petition in support of the Environmental Protection Agency's proposal to limit carbon pollution; sign up to receive updates from CRP; help fight climate change denial using Reality Drop, a digital tool designed to facilitate science-based commenting on relevant news stories; and/or submit a video asking world leaders tough questions about climate change policy.
