To inform people about how metropolitan areas throughout the United States perform on a diverse range of social measures.

Background:
A project of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Center for the Advancement of Health, DiversityData is an online tool for exploring quality-of-life data across a wide range of U.S. metropolitan areas for different racial and ethnic population groups. The database uses eight indicators — crime, demographics, education, economic opportunity, health, housing, neighborhoods, and physical environment — to provide a scorecard that researchers, policy makers, and community leaders can use for comparison and to support advocacy for policy action and social change. The site also provides useful information for anyone considering a move to a different part of the country. Funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, research and data analysis for the project are ongoing.

Outstanding Web Features:
Even first-time visitors will find the DiversityData.org site easy to maneuver. On the home page, users select a state and a metropolitan area within it to view a summary profile covering all indicators. From the summary, it's possible to focus on a particular area of interest, customize the profile, or see a region's ranking against all the other metropolitan areas in the database — in chart or map format. And from any summary or focus page, users can access other regions in the same state (or nearby states), or can quickly compare to other states.
