Emergent Universe
Mission:
To encourage young people to learn about emergence — complex behaviors that arise from the interaction of simple parts — and to develop an "emergent" perspective.
Background:
Emergent Universe is an online museum of science that uses animation, art, games, and music to draw viewers into exploring emergent phenomena. Designed by professors at the University of California - Davis and funded primarily by the Institute for Complex Adaptive Matter, the site was developed for people who don't necessarily have a scientific background.
Outstanding Web Features:
The Emergent Universe site features a Fibril Connection exhibit where visitors can zoom in on a human brain and discover the mysteries of amyloid proteins. In the Unlocking the Universe section of the site, visitors can listen to music that expresses the concepts of emergence in quantum mechanics; view a manga comic book that illustrates an emergent perspective; zoom in on a pointillist image that illustrates length scales; "grow" a cubist-like cityscape; or generate complex emergent behaviors in a simple grid-like environment. In addition, visitors can interact with each other through the site's discussion forum, and teachers can share their thoughts on the EmergentLabs Wiki.
