Every Child a Reader and Writer
Mission:
To provide professional development that improves classroom practice and student achievement in reading and writing.
Background:
The Noyce Foundation launched the Every Child a Reader and Writer initiative in 2000 as a professional development program for K-5 teachers who teach writing. Through content coaching, professional development, and performance assessment, the program offers key strategies and teaching practices in workshops designed to improve early literacy achievement. The emphasis on writing stems from the belief — backed by research — that learning to write well helps students become better readers and helps them develop organizational and problem-solving skills. ECRW is part of the Inside Teaching professional learning collection at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Web site.
Outstanding Web Features:
The Every Child a Reader and Writer site provides K-5 teachers with a discussion of the value of professional development, professional development and implementation videos, and videocasts of four teacher-led workshops. The latter include teachers' reflections on the methods they employed, as well as examples of student work and curriculum resources used in the workshops. To help teachers adapt these methods for their own classrooms, strategies may be viewed as presented by the professional developer leading the seminar or as presented by the teachers working with their students.
