Eyes on Darfur
Mission:
To provide evidence of the violence being committed in Darfur.
Background:
Funded by the Save Darfur Coalition, Eyes on Darfur was launched in 2007 by Amnesty International's Crisis Prevention and Response Center (CPRC), a project developed to engage members, policy makers, and the public in preventing and responding to human rights crises around the world. With the help of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Amnesty International used satellite cameras and geospatial technologies for the site, which can reveal conditions on the ground for objects as small as two feet across.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the Eyes on Darfur Web site are encouraged to monitor vulnerable communities and take action to prevent further attacks. The site includes an archival feature that reveals villages destroyed since the civil war in Darfur began in 2003, including before and after satellite images, on-the-ground photography and video, and eyewitness accounts of the crisis. In addition, the site provides expert analysis of the conflict in Darfur and a detailed account of the international response. Visitors also can support the campaign by purchasing Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur, a collection of John Lennon's songs performed by popular musicians, including U2, Green Day, R.E.M., Christina Aguilera, and Lenny Kravitz.
