FactCheck.org
Mission:
To reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.
Background:
The Annenberg Political Fact Check, or factcheck.org, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit "consumer advocate" for voters that monitors the accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political figures in the form of television ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases. Its goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding. A useful tool for any voter who wants to stay informed, it is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The APPC accepts no funding from business corporations, labor unions, political parties, lobbying organizations, or individuals, but is funded primarily by an endowment from the Annenberg Foundation.
Outstanding Features:
The Web site home page presents the latest political ads, speeches, interviews, debates, or news releases, and includes a summary of each item, followed by an analysis of the information in it by factcheck.org staff, who supply sources and related reading at the end of the article. Less recent items can be found in the archive. The Web site also contains a searchable database, special reports, announcements, and the means to sign up to receive new factcheck.org items and special reports via e-mail.
