HeForShe
Mission: To provide a systematic approach to and platform for achieving gender equality.
Background: Launched in 2014 by UN Women, the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, the HeForShe campaign for gender equality provides a systematic approach to and targeted platform on which men and boys can engage and become change agents for the achievement of gender equality. The campaign's alignment with UN Women serves as an accelerator for its work across four strategic areas: accelerating women's economic empowerment; advancing women's political participation and leadership; supporting women's roles in peace and security building; and eliminating gender-based violence. To that end, HeForShe seeks to identify, engage, and mobilize a billion men in every city, community, and village around the world through online, offline, and mobile phone technology.
Outstanding Web Features: The HeForShe homepage features a real-time counter that tracks gender-equality actions around the world, including the number of gender-equality conversations had, commitments made, and events planned by both men and women. Visitors to the site are also invited to track HeForShe commitments and equality issues by country using a robust mapping tool. Under a "Take Action" heading, six action tiles serve as gateways to additional information on how visitors can get involved with gender-equality issues in the areas of Education, Health, Identity, Work, Violence, and Politics. Visitors also can browse gender-related items in the site's newsroom; check out various action kits; learn more about HeForShe's pilot initiative, Impact 10x10x10; and submit an event. The HeForShe campaign also has an active presence on Facebook and Twitter (hashtag #HeForShe), as well as on photo-sharing site Flickr.
