Historypin

Historypin

Mission:
To create a digital history of the world.

Background:
Developed by We Are What We Do, a London-based nonprofit, in partnership with Google, Historypin enables people around the world to share photos, videos, audio clips, and narrative text on a virtual map that others can browse and educators can use as a teaching tool. The online platform was created to help people from different generations, cultures, and places come together around the history of their families and neighborhoods and build stronger communities.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can search the Historypin map by place and time; compare old photos to contemporary Google Earth views; learn more about the Historypin community; and take virtual tours of particular places and times. Registered users can put together their own tour using any content on the site, "pin" new content, and create a collection around a particular topic, theme, or event. (An existing Google account is required for registration.) In addition, Historypin mobile users can use their cameras to capture and upload present-day versions of classic images on-the-go.
