Hunger Project
Mission:
To end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women-centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world.
Background:
Founded in 1977, the Hunger Project works with local partners in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America to end hunger and poverty by empowering people to become self-reliant, meet their own basic needs, and build better futures for their children. In developing effective bottom-up strategies, the organization focuses on mobilizing people at the grassroots level, empowering women as key change agents, and building partnerships with local governments. Key initiatives include its holistic Epicenter Strategy, which brings together a cluster of villages to create a path to sustainable self-reliance by leveraging programmatic synergy, efficient use of existing resources, and income-generating development; a microfinance program in Africa; and projects that celebrate girl children in Bangladesh; strengthen elected women leaders in India; and advance maternal and childhood nutrition.
