John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

Mission:
To promote excellence in journalism worldwide and invest in the vitality of twenty-six U.S. communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers.

Background:
Established in December 1950, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation was named after two brothers — a newspaperman and a businessman, respectively — who transformed the small Akron newspaper owned by their father, editor-publisher Charles Landon Knight, into the nation's largest newspaper chain.

Outstanding Web Features:
Earlier this year, the Knight Foundation relaunched its Web site, augmenting its video, audio, image, and textual content, while featuring a growing library of multimedia "stories of transformation" about Knight-funded projects. Visitors are able to comment on stories in real time and provide feedback on the site in general. Several sections of the site include videos featuring Knight officials such as foundation president Alberto Ibargüen, program VPs, and program directors. Visitors also can learn about work the foundation is supporting in the twenty-six communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers. The site also provides access to PDF versions of the foundation's annual reports from 1999 to 2008 as well as its new "progress report," a succinct online version of the foundation's traditional annual report.
