Market Makeovers

Market Makeovers

Mission:
To increase access to healthy, affordable foods by transforming the options available at small corner stores.

Background:
Market Makeovers is an online toolkit designed to help public health practitioners and advocates, educators, policy makers, and others learn how to increase access to affordable, high-quality, healthy foods in "food desert" neighborhoods by convincing small, local markets to offer healthier food choices. The resources on the site are based on best practices and lessons learned from three South Los Angeles market transformation efforts undertaken by the South LA Healthy Eating Active Community Initiative (LA HEAC), which is funded by the California Endowment, Public Matters, and local high school students. In addition to providing resources, the site seeks to act as a forum for exchanging ideas and as a springboard for advancing work in the burgeoning field of market transformation.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Market Makeovers site offers downloadable, user-friendly how-to videos of market makeovers; videos about the South LA "food desert" — its evolution, consequences of, and efforts to change it; videos about nutrition, kitchen skills, and recipes; and user-generated videos about all of the above. Visitors to the site can register to share videos and learn how to become involved with future market makeovers, and can also browse news about healthy eating in America.
