Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation
Mission:
To evoke the memory and spiritual presence of Martin Luther King, Jr. through the construction of a memorial in Washington, D.C.
Background:
In 1996, Congress approved the construction of a memorial honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., which will be situated on a four-acre site on the National Mall near the Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Jefferson memorials. The ceremonial groundbreaking for the memorial took place in 2006, and construction is expected to be completed in 2010. To date, $104 million has been raised of the $120 million needed to build the memorial.
Outstanding Web Features:
The MLK Memorial Project Foundation Web site features a video about the memorial, including a virtual tour of the site; information on ways children, college students, and adults can support the project, including a downloadable toolbar that generates five cents for the memorial for every Web search performed.
