Messages for Japan
Mission:
To deliver messages of hope and support from all over the world to the people of Japan.
Background:
Messages for Japan was developed in response to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck northern Japan, killing at least 13,000 people and leaving more than 154,000 people homeless. Powered by Google, the site enables people around the world to post notes to earthquake/tsunami survivors in their own language and have them automatically translated into Japanese.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can post a message to earthquake/tsunami survivors that will be translated into Japanese via the Google Translate API. Google Translate works by detecting patterns in documents that have already been translated by human translators — a process called "statistical machine translation." Because the translations are generated by machines, not all the translations are perfect. Visitors also can view messages submitted by people around the world in English and Japanese on an interactive map and make a donation to select organizations in support of relief and recovery efforts.
