Morgan Library & Museum

Morgan Library & Museum

Mission:
To foster greater knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of (primarily) Western history and culture.

Background:
The roots of the Morgan Library & Museum can be traced back to 1924, when J.P. Morgan, Jr. donated his father's extensive private library to the public. One of the most inmportant financiers in the history of the United States, J. Pierpont Morgan, Sr. was also an avid collector, acquiring art objects in virtually every medium, including the rare books, manuscripts, drawings, prints, and ancient artifacts that are the core of the Morgan Library & Museum's current holdings. Through purchases and generous gifts, the facility has continued to acquire rare materials as well as important music manuscripts, early children's books, a variety of Americana, and materials from the twentieth century.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Morgan library's site features an interactive list of its collections, which provides a scanning tool that enables users to review detailed images of ancient texts, manuscripts, musical pieces, and paintings. In addition, the site provides access to extensive research services, including an online collection catalog.
