National Peace Corps Association
Mission:
To lead the Peace Corps community and others working to foster peace by collaborating in service, education, and advocacy.
Background:
Launched in 1979, the National Peace Corps Association works to help Peace Corps alumni — today numbering more than two hundred thousand — keep connected, informed, and engaged. Established by returned Peace Corps volunteers, the association manages the Web sites Peace Corps Connect and Connected Peace Corps, as well as Africa Rural Connect. It also publishes Worldview, a quarterly magazine of news and commentary.
Outstanding Web Features:
Peace Corps Connect offers information about countries where the Peace Corps has a presence, as well as a job center, educational resources for teachers, background on developing world issues, and additional information on initiatives supported by NPCA. Connected Peace Corps offers real-time communication portals to help past, present, and future volunteers and staff stay informed, take action on important issues, and share resources (registration required). The site offers, among other things, rich multimedia content, live chats, blogs and discussion forums, polls, and community news. Registered Connected Peace Corps users can also create their own profile page and connect to individuals with similar interests. A collaborative online platform, Africa Rural Connect, brings together current and former volunteers with the African Diaspora, development practitioners, scholars, technology innovators, and anyone with ideas for improving agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa.
