Oil Change International
Mission:
To expose the true costs of oil and facilitate the transition toward clean energy.
Background:
Oil Change International is a research and advocacy organization that seeks to move the energy industry toward an environmentally and socially sustainable energy future. The organization works to identify and surmount political barriers to that transformation and to build strategic alliances with organizations that are also concerned about the role oil plays in many of the world's most pressing problems.
Outstanding Web Features:
Although the Oil Change site clearly offers a biased view of the oil industry, it does so with eye-catching graphics and other tools. The Price of Oil section directs users to eight different areas of concern, including local pollution, global warming, war and terror, and alternative energy sources. Each area contains information enhanced by links to reports, fact sheets, blogs, grassroots campaigns, polls, audio broadcasts, videos, and/or other Web sites. Each section also gives users the opportunity to share the information with others via e-mail, take action regarding their concerns, and/or make a donation to the organization. Elsewhere on the site, Separation of Oil & State, a campaign to get oil money out of politics, lets users type in their ZIP code or state to find out how much oil and gas money, if any, their government representatives are receiving (and includes instructions for sending an e-mail to chastise or congratulate them, depending on the results); while End Oil Aid provides information about a coalition comprised of Oil Change International, the Jubilee USA Network, the Rainforest Action Network, the Bank Information Center, Amazon Watch, and Friends of the Earth that works to address the issues at the intersection of oil dependence, climate change, and international debt.
