Online Access to Research in the Environment

Online Access to Research in the Environment

Mission:
To improve the quality and effectiveness of environmental research, education, and training in low-income countries.

Background:
Funded by the William and Flora Hewlett and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur foundations, Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE) enables developing nations to gain free access to one of the world's largest collections of environmental science literature. Launched in October 2006, OARE contains more than a thousand scientific journal titles owned and published by more than two hundred publishing houses, scholarly societies, and scientific associations. By 2008, another thirty-six countries will be able to access the site.

Outstanding Web Features:
Coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program, Yale University, and leading scientific and technical publishers, OARE's Web site provides eligible users with access to major scientific and technical journals from all over the world in a wide range of environment-related disciplines. Participating publishers include the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Johns Hopkins University Press, while research on the site covers a wide range of disciplines, including biotechnology, botany, climate change, environmental economics, environmental law and policy, environmental toxicology and pollution, geography, oceanography, urban planning, and zoology. The site also offers an FAQ and a description of who is eligible for access to the complete journals. For those who are not eligible, the Journals page offers drop-down menus to other free collections and reference sources.
