Pew Environment Group

Pew Environment Group

Mission:
To strengthen environmental policies and practices in ways that produce significant and measurable protection for terrestrial and marine systems worldwide.

Background:
The Pew Environment Group, a division of the Pew Charitable Trusts, works to advance scientific understanding of the causes and consequences of environmental problems, design innovative policy solutions to these issues, and mobilize public support for their implementation. The group's efforts are focused on reducing the scope and severity of three major global environmental problems: the destruction of the world's oceans, with a particular emphasis on marine fisheries; the loss of large wilderness ecosystems; and changes to the earth's physical and biological systems linked to the buildup of greenhouse gases.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can explore the Pew Environment Group's work by region via an interactive map or browse a list of its active and archived campaigns. The site also features additional information about the group's research programs, including the Ocean Science division, a unit that includes several initiatives aimed at improving scientific knowledge about problems confronting the world's oceans and identifying policies that could help solve them; the Sea Around Us project, which is studying the effects of fishing on the world's marine ecosystems; and the Lenfest Ocean Program, which is investing in scientific research on living marine ecosystems. Each program page includes details about the effort, recent news, and related resources as well as a list of experts in the field. The site also has a section devoted to actions alerts, which can be sorted by deadline or topic and completed online; an events calendar; a searchable resource library; and videos.
