Mission:
To support American poets at all stages of their careers and foster an appreciation of contemporary poetry.
Background:
Launched in 1996, poets.org is the official Web site of the Academy of American Poets, which was founded in 1934 and administers seven major awards and nearly two hundred college prizes nationwide. The organization also offers programs designed to foster greater appreciation of contemporary poetry, including National Poetry Month held every April and American Poet, a biannual literary journal and magazine for its members. Among other things, Poets.org offers its one million monthly visitors access to thousands of poemsand hundreds of poet biographies, essays and interviews, and poetry recordings.
Outstanding Web Features:
Registered users can createtheir own poetry anthologies using content from the Poets.org site and download the Poem Flowapp via the iTunes store, which features daily poems, moving or static text, and literary trivia. The site includes a Poetry mapof poets, poems, events, literary journals, writing programs, and poetry organizations; a national events calendar; discussion forums; an audio archiveof nearly five hundred recordings dating to the 1960s; poetry videoscovering a wide range of topics, including the craft of writing; photos; resources for educators, including free poetry lesson plans and tips for teaching; and an online store. Also available are National Poetry Monthresources, including a list of thirty ways to celebrate, as well as a database of pocket-sized poemsfor Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 26. In addition, visitors to the site can sign upto receive a monthly e-mail newsletter on new content posted to the site or a Poem-A-Daydelivered throughout the month of April.
