Rainforest Heroes
Mission:
To empower a new generation to protect the earth.
Background:
Formerly known as the Kid's Corner, Rainforest Action Network's most popular Web area has now spun off into an online multi-media adventure in rainforest education. Attracting as many as five million hits a month during the school year, the site features creative activities to inspire and encourage kids to help save the world's rain forests.
Outstanding Feature:
About Rainforests includes fact sheets, a slide show, and the fourteen-minute Forest Family Forever! video, which combines nature footage and 3D computer animation to tell the story of a thousand-year-old grandfather tree (voice of Ed Asner) who shares his knowledge of rain forests with his sapling grandson, Sappy (Jake Richardson); the music is by Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead and Planet Drum. Kids can also download the Rainforest Hero Action Packet; play on the Jungle Gym, filled with activities like the kids' art gallery, crafts and recipes, and games; and go to the Heroes Corner to see what some young activists are doing. The Kid's Action area shows youngsters how to get involved in their own communities.
For educators, the Web site features Teacher's Lounge, which includes lesson plans, resources, and worksheets, along with a free, downloadable Rainforests Forever! curriculum supplement for grades 3-6. Teachers that sign up for the Rainforests in the Classroom Program receive a monthly e-mail newsletter and Education in Action materials, which include Forest Family Forever!, the Rainforest Hero Action Packet, and Rainforests Forever! curriculum supplement, as well as lesson plan ideas and fact sheets for their students.
