Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Mission:
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation seeks to improve the health and health care of all Americans and focuses its grantmaking on four goals: to assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost; to improve care and support for people with chronic health conditions; to promote healthy communities and lifestyles; and to reduce the personal, social, and economic harm caused by substance abuse.
Purpose of Site:
The recently redesigned Web site of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provides information about the organization and its programs and publications. In addition, the site offers extensive resources for grantseekers and grant recipients.
Background:
Robert Wood Johnson, who was a brigadier general during World War II, devoted his life to public service and to building the family firm of Johnson & Johnson into the world's largest health and medical care products conglomerate. He had an intense concern for the hospital patient, whom he often thought was lost in the world of medical care, and he strongly advocated improved education for both doctors and nurses. Johnson, who died in 1968, left virtually all of his personal fortune to the foundation that bears his name, creating one of the world's largest private philanthropies.
Home Page:
Across the top of the home page, a toolbar helps users move easily to the main areas of the site: About Us, Applying for a Grant, Grantee Resources, Our Programs, Publications, Newsroom, Sign In, and Site Map. Links to the foundation's program areas are accessible on the left side of the home page, while quick links — Applying for a Grant, Check Funding Opportunities, Order a Publication, and more — are listed along the right side. Finally, the main body of the page features headlines and links to new reports and initiatives by the foundation.
Outstanding Feature:
The impressive search tool on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation site helps visitors navigate the site effectively. Users enter a keyword into the search box and receive a list of results that are organized by category area. For example, the term "substance abuse" is found in several categories, including National Programs, Grants, and Publications. The site's searching capabilities allow users to also perform advanced searches within each major category.
Honorable Mention:
The Grantee Resources section of the site informs grant recipients on how to work with the foundation, how to meet the requirements of a grant, and how the foundation and fellow recipients can help administer programs. Topics include Reporting Instructions, Grant Revision Guidelines, How-To Tools, and Frequently Asked Questions. The section also helps grantees find other foundation grantees in their area and lists upcoming funding opportunities.
