San Francisco Symphony Keeping Score

San Francisco Symphony Keeping Score

Mission:
To bring the joy of classical music to people of all ages and musical backgrounds.

Background:
Created by San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas, Keeping Score includes an interactive Web site, a PBS television series, and an education program.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Keeping Score site invites people of all musical backgrounds — especially students and their teachers — to interact with notable classical music composers and their music. The site lets visitors follow the musical score as a piece is played and "interact" with the composers who have been profiled on the television show. There are also special sections devoted to the likes of Beethoven, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Copland. In addition, a historical timeline enables visitors to the site to delve into the political, social, and cultural milieus that informed the work of the featured composers, while downloadable lesson plans allow teachers to incorporate the information into the classroom. Visitors can also leave comments and share content via Facebook and Twitter.
