To support various philanthropic causes, primarily in the areas of cancer research, the performing arts, and Jewish continuity.

Background:
Sidney Kimmel is chairman of the board and founder of Jones Apparel Group Inc., a Fortune 500 company and one of the world's leading designers and marketers of branded apparel and footwear. Kimmel is also part owner of the Miami Heat; his film company, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, has produced films such as 9 1/2 Weeks, Clan of the Cave Bear, and The Emperor's Club. In 1993, he founded the Sidney Kimmel Foundation, which has awarded more than $420 million to philanthropic causes, including $120 million to arts and culture. The foundation, which takes as its slogan "Connecting Promise to Progress," has made grants to leading cultural institutions in Philadelphia: the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts ($35 million), a striking example of modern architecture and home to the Philadelphia Orchestra; the National Constitution Center ($5 million), for which it funded a theater; and the National Museum of Jewish American History ($25 million). The foundation has also supported the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum ($5 million), in Washington, D.C.
