Smithsonian Global

Mission: Smithsonian Global aims to foster international collaboration to save endangered species, improve museum design, and rescue and restore priceless works of art.

Background: Smithsonian Global, an organization that is actively involved in research and conservation, works in more than a hundred and forty countries across multiple disciplines. The thousands of individuals behind the Smithsonian’s international projects —  scientists, educators, curators, technology specialists, and experts in many fields — provide expertise in areas including advisory services, collections, long-term research, professional training, the power to convene, and cutting-edge technology. Project areas include Science and Conservation, where researchers work to promote healthy ecosystems, conserve biodiversity, and find ways to predict and mitigate global climate change; Culture and the Arts, where teams work to protect cultural heritage at risk, support established and emerging artists, and encourage artistic and cultural diversity and sustainability for future generations; and Education and Outreach, which through museums, research centers, workshops, virtual classrooms, and educational labs offers opportunities to engage students, teachers, and educational leaders worldwide.

Outstanding Web Features: Visitors to the site can explore Smithsonian Global's projects on an interactive map that displays its global presence across the world. Projects can be filtered by theme (Science & Conservation, Culture &Arts, or Education & Outreach) or viewed with all themes included. By clicking on a map peg, visitors can see active projects serving that part of the world, including the experts conducting the research and a summary that links to a more comprehensive information page. For more information, visitors can research the experts responsible for reporting their findings, review articles detailing the impact Smithsonian Global has worldwide, and read stories about the organization's accomplishments. In addition, the organization encourages partnerships with like-minded entities through its partners page, and shares news and updates via the Office of International Relations' blog.
