Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation
Mission:
To create the world's leading collection of DNA results and corresponding genealogies.
Background:
The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, a nonprofit scientific organization, has compiled a genetic and genealogy catalog of more than five million records from 172 countries — about two-thirds of the world's nations. The free, online SMGF database can link an individual's genetic profile to specific ancestors by name going back at least six generations. The foundation was inspired by discussions in 1999 between biotech billionaire James LeVoy Sorenson and Brigham Young University professor Scott Woodward about using DNA in genealogy to show how closely related each person is to every other.
Outstanding Web Features:
The site allows visitors to request a participation kit, through which they can add their information to the SMGF database. The database itself includes searchable data specific to Y-chromosome DNA and mitochondria. The site also provides an interactive collection map and success stories from database users, as well as a pedigree chart and extensive information about molecular genealogy, including a glossary of terms.
