Southern Poverty Law Center
Mission:
To fight hate and bigotry and seek justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
Background:
Founded by civil rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin, Jr. in 1971, the Southern Poverty Law Center is internationally known for its efforts to track and expose the activities of hate groups in the United States. Through its Teaching Tolerance program, the center also produces and distributes documentary films, books, lesson plans, and other materials that promote tolerance and respect.
Outstanding Web Features:
The center's Web site features an interactive map that tracks active hate groups in the U.S., a database of prominent extremists and extremist organizations, and a collection of landmark court cases. Vitiors to the site can take a stand against hate by adding their name to the Stand Strong Against Hate map, browse past issues of the center's Intelligence Report, and keep informed through SPLC blogs and publications.
