Teach For America

Teach For America

Mission:
To build a movement to eliminate educational inequity in this country. Teach For America's vision is: One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

Background:
Teach For America recruits recent college graduates to teach for two years in low-income rural and urban communities. More than ten thousand individuals have worked with the organization to reach more than 1.5 million students since 1990, helping to expand opportunities for these children in twenty communities across the country. After completing the required two years of teaching, more than 60 percent of Teach For America alumni continue to impact students' lives by remaining in education as teachers, principals, school funders, and policy advisors.

Outstanding Feature:
Potential Teach For America teachers can turn to the organization's recently redesigned Web site to learn everything they need to know about the program and how it works. Under the Why Join heading, the site describes the candidates Teach For America wants, what it takes to do the job, and what happens after the two-year commitment. Its Meet Our Corps section features a diary of a participating teacher, profiles of current teachers and alumni, and letters from those teaching in rural regions. The How It Works part of the site provides details on submitting an application, the training process, and upcoming Teach For America information sessions held on college campuses throughout the country.
