Toshiba America Foundation
Mission:
To contribute to the quality of science and mathematics education in U.S. communities by investing in projects designed by classroom teachers in grades K-12.
Background:
Toshiba America, Inc., the North American branch of technology giant Toshiba Corp., established the Toshiba America Foundation in 1990 to address concerns about the quality of math and science education in the United States. Since its inception, the foundation has helped more than 1,300 schools strengthen and develop math and science learning opportunities. Its grants support a variety of hands-on, classroom projects designed to help students better understand how math and science function in the world around them.
Outstanding Feature:
The foundation's Web site is a valuable resource for teachers interested in submitting grant proposals or finding new ideas for classroom instruction. The Recent Grants section and the Grants Archive provide summaries of projects supported by foundation funds, and the Featured Grants area highlights projects such as the Partnership on the Pacific at the Ocean Institute and the Coney Island Classroom at the Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium. The site also invites teachers to contact the foundation to learn more about specific projects and get in touch with peers who have received Toshiba grants.
