United Nations Foundation

United Nations Foundation

Mission:
To support the goals and objectives of the United Nations and its charter in order to promote a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world, with special emphasis on the UN's work on behalf of economic, social, environmental, and humanitarian causes.

Background:
In September 1997, businessman and philanthropist Ted Turner announced a historic gift of $1 billion to support United Nations causes. The United Nations Foundation was born, and Turner sits on its board of directors. The foundation engages in four primary activities: grantmaking — providing additional funding for programs and people served by UN agencies; helping to forge new partnerships among UN agencies, the private sector, and NGOs in order to build support for the UN and its efforts and enhance the effectiveness of service delivery; in cooperation with its sister organization, the Better World Fund, sponsoring or conducting outreach efforts aimed at educating the public about the UN's role in addressing global issues and forging international cooperation; and raising new funds from public and private sources to support UN programs. Established in March 1998, the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships coordinates, channels, and monitors contributions from the foundation.

Outstanding Feature:
The Web site provides in-depth information about the foundation's four grantmaking areas: children's health; the environment; peace, security, and human rights; and women and population.
