Mission:
To enhance news literacy skills and programs in Chicago and nationwide.

Background:
Why News Matters, one component of a three-year, $6 million initiative launched in September 2013 by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, is an online resource designed to help individuals and communities develop informed perspectives and the navigational skills needed to become smarter consumers and creators of fact-based information.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can explore news literacy tools and programs for educators, studentscommunities, and journalists; download articles and presentations, curricula and evaluations, and research reports; sign up for the monthly WNM e-newsletter; and/or browse/upload videos that illustrate a moment in which news made a difference in their lives.
