Mission:
To raise awareness about the state of the U.S. voting system and to find solutions that increase voter turnout and participation in elections.

Background:
Founded in 2005 to coincide with the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Why Tuesday? works to catalyze a national discussion around voting and voting reforms. With the United States lagging nearly every other nation in voter turnout, the organization advocates for selecting a date to vote that is more convenient for working voters. Census data indicates that the inconvenience of voting on Tuesdays — a day originally chosen to fit the agrarian lifestyle of the nineteenth century — is the primary reason Americans do not participate in elections.

The Why Tuesday? Web site features videos of news clips and interviews with citizens, elected officials, and experts regarding the state of the U.S. voting system. It also provides information on how to become a correspondent; an interactive map of elections officials, election reform groups, and elected officials in each state; and links to Why Tuesday?'s Flickr, MySpace, Facebook, and Think MTV pages. Visitors to the site can also subscribe to the Why Tuesday? podcast and blog and watch videos from the organization's Candidate Challenge, including a clip from interactive cable channel Current TV.
