Purpose of Site:
To provide information on the Hewlett Foundation and its grantmaking activities, including descriptions of the foundation's main program areas, instructions on how to apply for grants, and a record of previous grants. The site also serves as a showcase for publications of the foundation and its annual reports.
Background:
The Hewlett Foundation, incorporated as a private foundation in California in 1966, was established by industrialist William R. Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard Co., his wife, Flora Lamson Hewlett, and their oldest son, Walter B. Hewlett. The foundation supports projects around the world but earmarks a portion of its funds for the San Francisco Bay Area. It also strives to support projects that show promise of stimulating more private philanthropy in the United States.
Home Page:
On the home page of the Hewlett Foundation Web site, a bar across the top provides links to the News & Publications, Program Areas, Grants, and Search areas of the site. Along the side of the page, users find links to the following pages: About the Foundation, Board of Directors, President, Staff, and Feedback. The body of the home page is dedicated to new features on the site, background information on the foundation, and the organization's general policies and goals.

The Program Areas of the site provides in-depth descriptions of the foundation's mission, strategies, and efforts for each of its program areas. After clicking on Program Areas, users can choose Conflict Resolution, Education, Environment, Family & Community Development, Performing Arts, Population, or US Latin American Relations. The main page of each individual program area includes a detailed description of the foundation's efforts and a side bar of links that lead to program-specific summaries of 2001, plans for 2002, and instructions for grant applications. Also, each category provides links to lists of grants that have been awarded in each of the past three years. The lists of grant recipients include the name of the organization; a link to a Web site, if available; the amount awarded; and a brief description of the program funded.
