WiserEarth
Mission:
To provide the tools and a platform for nonprofits, funders, social entrepreneurs, students, organizers, academics, activists, scientists, and citizens to find each other, make connections, build alliances, and share resources.
Background:
A project of the Natural Capital Institute, WiserEarth is an international directory and networking forum that maps and connects concerned individuals with organizations that address social justice, poverty, and the environment. Like Wikipedia, WiserEarth encourages its users to create and edit content on its Web site, which contains a database of more than 100,000 organizations based in nearly 250 countries, territories, and sovereign islands. The site was launched in 2007 in response to a belief that the effectiveness of nonprofits and individuals working to incite positive change is undermined by a lack of collective awareness, duplicative efforts, and poor connectivity. Using the WISER (World Index for Social and Environmental Responsibility) Platform, WiserEarth provides a free Web presence and several tools to help individuals and organizations build visibility for their work and connect with others in their field.
Outstanding Web Features:
The WiserEarth Web site enables users to browse organizations, individuals, and groups and to connect with others via a list of focus areas and an interactive map. Visitors can also add to the site's discussion forum and can browse or add resources, jobs, events, and articles (or "WikiPages"). The site, which can be viewed in different languages, also includes a tutorial, a help desk, and an area in which to share feedback.
