World Vision
Mission:
To help children, families, and communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty.
Background:
World Vision, an international Christian relief and development organization, was founded in 1950 to help children orphaned in the Korean War. Since its inception, the organization's staff of roughly 40,000 in a hundred countries has helped nearly 100 million people. The organization works to provide emergency and hunger relief, long-term community development programs, agricultural development assistance, and leadership training; educate the public about poverty- and justice-related issues; and advocate on behalf of the poor and children in crisis.
Outstanding Web Features:
The World Vision Web site features an interactive map complete with detailed country profiles, a virtual tour of the organization's work around the world, and the World Vision Report, a weekly radio program hosted by former ABC World News Tonight correspondent Peggy Wehmeyer. Visitors to the the site can also access a number of blogs, podcasts, and videos. In response to the earthquake in Haiti, the organization launched a Web portal featuring real-time updates about its work there via Facebook and Twitter. Visitors to the site can also join the organization's advocacy network and support a broad range of social causes advocated by World Vision.
