100 Best Communities for Young People
This year's 100 Best Communities for Young People share many of the same characteristics and employ similar strategies for meeting the needs of local youth, a report from America's Promise Alliance and ING finds. An In-Depth Look at: The 2011 100 Best Communities for Young People Presented by ING (19 pages, PDF) notes, for example, that 69 percent of the winning communities have some form of youth council that directly engages with the board of education or local government, giving young people a say in decisions that affect them. Chosen from more than three hundred cities, towns, and counties from all fifty states and the District of Columbia, twenty-two communities — including Anchorage, Alaska; Boys Town, Nebraska; Louisville, Kentucky; Solano County, California; and St. Petersburg, Florida — are now five-time honorees, while twenty-nine communities are being recognized for the first time.
