A Movement to Transform Foster Parenting

To ensure that children in foster care facing difficult circumstances and/or dealing with trauma heal and are reunited with their families, child welfare agencies and communities need to better support, engage, and empower foster parents, a report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation finds. According to the report, A Movement to Transform Foster Parenting (24 pages, PDF), foster parents routinely report being left out of important decisions despite being key partners in achieving positive outcomes for the children in their care. Based on the foundation's work to improve child welfare outcomes, the report calls on public agencies to provide targeted resources, information, and support services aimed at building foster parents' skills; forge stronger partnerships with foster parents by communicating the value of foster families; and use data- and new technology-driven approaches to recruit and match foster parents and caregivers based on children's needs.
