'Analysis of Policies, Practices, and Programs for Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion'

Successful efforts by foundations to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) require leadership, a common language, a broadly embraced message, openness to self-reflection and learning, early positive reinforcement, and external supports, a report from the D5 Coalition finds. Based on a literature review and interviews with officials from seven foundations, the report, Analysis of Policies, Practices, and Programs for Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (50 pages, PDF), found that the funders are actively making changes to promote diversity and inclusion but are more likely to implement practices than to institutionalize policies, and that they lack data beyond the racial and gender composition of staff and board. The report also suggests that the philanthropic field could learn how an organization can advance deep-seated, sustainable change from a handful of foundations that have pursued DEI as a cross-cutting focus of their operations and programs. An accompanying resource guide provides tools and programs for making the case that DEI is important, writing DEI into a foundation’s policies, implementing strong DEI practices into programs and operations, and monitoring progress to ensure accountability.
