Art Museums by the Numbers 2016

At art museums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, total endowment income accounted for an average 22 percent of all revenue in 2016, while contributions from individuals and families, foundations and trusts, and corporations made up 11 percent, 7 percent, and 4 percent, respectively, a brief from the Association of Art Museum Directors finds. According to Arts Museums by the Numbers 2016 (10 pages, PDF), individual and family memberships and admission fees each contributed another 6 percent of total revenue, while within the category of private contributions, gifts from individuals and families accounted for 33 percent, grants from foundations and trusts for 21 percent, and corporate giving for 12 percent. The brief also found that attendance at museums in the three countries was nearly 62.2 million, up slightly from 61.5 million in 2014 and 61.4 million in 2015.
