From Scarcity to Abundance: Mapping the Giving Ecosystem

The global giving ecosystem is complex and diverse, with 85 percent of survey respondents around the world reporting giving in some form in 2021, a report from GivingTuesday finds. According to the report, From Scarcity to Abundance: Mapping the Giving Ecosystem (36 pages, PDF), non-monetary giving was twice as common as monetary giving: 76 percent of acts of generosity were non-monetary and only 5 percent of those who gave said they contributed money only. Moreover, 65 percent of giving did not involve registered nonprofit entities; in the United States, giving to non-registered entities was more than twice as common as giving to registered nonprofits, with most people giving to multiple types of recipients. Among U.S. respondents, 82 percent reported giving—of whom 59 percent gave money, 67 percent gave goods, and 36 percent volunteered their time; 22 percent gave both money and goods; and 27 gave all three.
